In1960,inaruralpartofWestGermany,anAmericanmilitarybaseissetupinasmallvillageof250inhabitants.Now,6000soldiersarelivingintheregion,andalthoughnoonereallylikesthem,everybodyisdoingbusinesswiththem.Someturnoldbarnsin"typicallyAmericanbars"whereGIscanspendtheirpayfordrinks;numerousprostitutesarevisitingtheregionregularlytoallowtheAmericanstoforgetabouttheirhomesicknessforseveralcostlyminutes;othersbenefitfromtheconstructionofamilitaryairbase.RobertNeidhardtbelongstothelastgroup.Heisadisillusionedmanwhoonlywantstomakesomequickmoney.Robertsuppliesthegravelfortherunwayconstruction.Buttheblackmarketturnsouttobemostprofitable:RobertsellsthegravelunderhandtoGermancontractors,thusearningtwicewitheverydelivery.Butonenight,Robertispursuedbythepolicewhowanttostopblackmarketactivities.Onhisflight,Robertrunsovertwopedestrians.Althoughtheaccidentisnothisfault,Robertdoesnotgotothepolice,andhisunscrupulousnesstakeshimtoextrememeasures.
